The 9th annual Cactus Killie Cook-Out (CKCO) will be on March 8, 2008 (second Saturday).

    The location is the -

Ramada Plaza Hotel Phoenix at Metro Center
        12027 North 28th Drive
        Cactus Road/I-17 Exit 209
        Phoenix, AZ 85029 US

The Cactus Killie Cook-Out is trying an experiment this year.  We anticipate some substantial expenses over past years and appreciate both your participation and your donations.  By donations, we mean 1) providing fish for the auctions, 2) buying fish in the auction, 3) participating in the raffle, and 4) making cash contributions as you feel led.

If you plan to attend ("register") - contact Allan Semeit (e-mail: azkillie@cox.net).
    • There is no registration fee, but only "registered" attendees will be invited to a free dinner at the hotel's restaurant.

    • Walk-ins are welcome.
See below for the list of who has "registered".
If you are an out-of-town attendee and are looking for a place to crash Saturday night - contact Craig McGowan (e-mail: sport_fn1@yahoo.com).

SPEAKERS:  We have two confirmed speakers - David Koran and Ken Normandin and each will be speak on two different topics.
    • David Koran is renown for his expertise with pupfishes and the genus Aphanius.
    • Ken Normandin is well known for his presentations on Rivulus and native fishes.

    Ken Normandin -
    • Was honored by the American Killifish Association (AKA) as Killifish Hobbyist of the Year for 2000 and is a former chairman of the Rivulus sub-committee of the AKA's Killifish Conservation Committee.
    • Currently maintains approximately 300 tanks, mostly filled with his favorite genus, Rivulus, of which he maintains about 70 species/locations.
    • Began his involvement with killifish in 1984 when he saw an advertisement for the San Diego Killifish Association at a show at their killifish show at the exhibition halls in Balboa Park.  He attended his first killifish meeting with the likes of Monty Lehman, John Pitcairn, Russ Feilzer, and others.  However, after a few years, life got in the way...
    • Moved to Jacksonville, FL, in 1992, due to a military reassignment.  His renewed interest in killies led to being referred to Mark Rodriguez in Tampa, FL.  He visited Mark and left with several pairs of killies (blue gularis and others), as well as contact information for the AKA.
    • Joined the AKA and the Sun Coast Killifish Society.
    • Rekindled a childhood love for tromping through the waterways in search of his own "wild fish".
    • Ken has become a well known collector of native fishes, particularly those in the southeastern United States.
    • Participated in a collecting trip to Panama in January, 2006.  The trip was a cooperative effort between a group of dedicated hobbyists and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) to determine the geographic ranges of several Rivulus species as well as a few livebearer species.
    • Assisted  several scientific institutions by providing living and preserved samples for genetic research.
Has been honored to speak on his favorite genus at several local club shows as well as at two AKA national conventions.

    David Koran -
    • Discovered killifish in 1969 while a graduate student at Northwestern and became indoctrinated after visiting George Maier's shop in Chicago a few months later.
    • Joined the American Killifish Association (AKA) in 1972 and "visited" his first AKA Convention in Palo Alto while on vacation that same year (met Allan Semeit!) and heard Colonel Scheel speak!
    • Elected to the AKA BOT in 1979, 1984, 1990, 2000 and 2006.
    • Served as Chairman of the AKA in 1981 and 2002.
    • In 1986, he developed an interest in collecting native killies.
    • In 1990 and thereafter, because of business trips to Denver and Las Vegas, he met Al Morales who got him hooked on pupfish. His first visit to Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge started Dave's efforts in captive breeding of endangered killies.
    • In 1993 Dave began the Central Appalachian Refugium and Center for New World Killifish Research and Conservation (CARCNWKRC).  CAR took off upon moving to his current home where he maintains a year round fish-basement and seasonal greenhouse and outdoor area of 3-600 tanks/tubs for the long term maintenance of 20+ species of pupfish, 10 or so related species, and 15+ species of Aphanius (maintenance populations of 100-200 fish per species).
    • In 2004, he fulfilled a longtime dream to collect annual killies during an Austrolebias safari in Uruguay.
    • In 2006, Dave took a collecting trip to Madre Dios, Peru.
    • Dave is a regular member of the Desert Fishes Council and also serves on the public advisory committee to the Devil's Hole Pupfish Recovery Team.  He is also the species coordinator for Cyp. longidorsalis and Megupsilon aporus for the International Killifish Conservation Project.
